Hiring an Electrical Estimator vs. Outsourcing: Which Makes Financial Sense?

FIELD NOTES / GROWING CONTRACTOR

Practical questions to help electrical contractors choose and brief estimating support. Confirm project suitability, scope and capacity before commissioning.

  1. Count the full employment cost

Include compensation, recruitment, benefits, software, management and coverage. Use your own figures; no generic salary assumption is needed.

  2. Count the full service cost

Compare quoted project or monthly fees, internal review time, revisions and addenda on equivalent scope.

  3. Model utilization

Compare a quiet month, typical month and peak workload. A full-time role and a capacity-limited monthly service solve different problems.

  4. Assess continuity and control

Consider internal project knowledge, supervision, turnaround needs and external handoff effort.

  5. Choose a hybrid when appropriate

Keep commercial decisions in-house and outsource defined packages. Reassess using actual cost and review time.
